Taking place backstage at a rock concert, Starlover looked at the crumbling relationship between the pretty singer, Magdelena and Jake, the self-obsessed philandering lead guitarist of the band Hard Rain. It also explored the fragility and constrictions of success in the tenuous and loveless world of Rock music.
Performed by Hampshire-based Bishopstoke Players, this piece centred on Magdelena’s realisation that her love for Jake and dreams of stardom are based more in fantasy than reality. Ownng to a very well performed portrayal by Kate Robbins, we feel for the disillusioned Magdelena.
Supported by a competent cast, this was an equally competent piece of theatre with a sense of ‘work in progress’ about it. My only reservation was that the Jake character was cast far too young and lacked the cynical charisma and destructive drive to be a believable Rock Star, but apart from that, I was thoroughly entertained.
